description Chilcoot Campground is one of five campgrounds in the popular Frenchman Lake Recreation Area of northern California's Plumas National Forest. The campground is far enough away from the lake that visitors can experience the serene sense of solitude that the remote mountain setting provides.
drivingDirection From Reno, Nevada, travel north on Highway 395. Merge onto Highway 70 west and continue 5 miles to Chilcoot. Turn north on Highway 284 and continue 5 miles to the campground.
facilitiesDescription The campground provides multiple single-family campsites. Several sites are available on a first-come, first-served basis. The campground is open for tent and RV camping, although some sites are only equipped to handle tents. Tables and campfire rings with grills are provided at each site. Vault toilets and drinking water are provided.

orientationDescription The campground stretches along the babbling Last Chance Creek, an alpine freshwater stream that flows directly into the Frenchman Lake. Chilcoot sits at an elevation of 5,100 feet, and alder, cottonwood and pine trees provide ample shade, with sagebrush dotting the landscape. A variety of wildlife make its home in the area.
recreationDescription During the summer the campground offers a variety of outdoor experiences including hiking, biking, picnicking and hunting. The nearby lake provides ample opportunities for swimming, boating, water skiing and jet skiing. Winter activities range from snowmobiling to ice fishing and cross-country skiing. Off-road vehicle trails in the area also offer recreation.
